I am interested to know why you only get DLA for a certain length of time, do they think you will be cured in 2 years time - I wish

Hi Val

No, it's not because they think you will be cured it's so they can re-assess needs based on up to date information, such as improvement in mobility, worsening of condition and treatments. The idea being you should get the correct entitlement. Unlike others I have never had a benefit problem and feel that I receive what I should. Think it all comes down to filling in the forms correctly; sometimes it's very hard to admit, even on paper, that we do have problems and need help! I'm the first to hold up my hand, I don't like people knowing that I can't actually do stuff! But that's what it's all about RollEyes. That said I was a Civil Servant so am familiar with paperwork!

Hi Lyn

We could all do with your help in filling out these forms.
I'm a fairly educated person but some forms baffle me. I haven't filled out one for DLA yet or the benefit that people who work can get because I'm not sure how to go about it. I was only diagnosed in January and, only recently, been told that I have the most aggressive form of RA. I work in a school full time but I struggle with stairs and doing displays on boards. I also find opening glue and paint bottles very difficult.
What do I need to do to get some assistance? It's all new to me.

Help!!!!!!

Hi Chris,

I agree the benefits system is very complicated and confusing. I am no expert, but having worked in social care do have some understanding of DLA. First of all, it is a non means tested benefit, i.e. it is independent of a person's income or ability to work or not, and focuses on the person's care and mobility needs. In order to qualify a person must have had the condition for at least 3 months and have care and, or, mobility needs. There are 3 levels for care:low, middle and high, but only 2 levels for mobility, low and high.

I use a site called Benefits and Work http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/, it costs £15.00 a year to join, however there is a lot of free information available on the site. If you e-mail me, I will send you a guide to completing the DLA form.

Have you had an Access to Work Assessment? The assessment focuses on helping disabled people in work and under the Disability Discrimination Act your Employer is duty bound to make reasonable adjustments to your place of work to enable you to continue in employment. I was also wondering whether you've had an assessment by an Occupational Therapist (OT)? After my assessment, I received a number of useful gadgets to help in the kitchen (bottle and jar openers) and bath board for my personal care; I was also given useful tips on how to conserve energy. The best way to go about getting an assessment is to ask you GP to refer you to your local OT service, this is usually provided by Social services or Health.

Hope this helps,

love,

Barbara

Also, NRAS do a fantastic guide to filling out the DLA claim form with our specific condition in mind. It's what I used when filling out my claim form last year.
